Here's how it works: You choose the project you wish to fund and email Ricki Weiss, the Executive Director, giving your name, address, and phone number where you can be reached during the day. She will email, call, or write to you regarding all the details. When a proposal is funded each teacher must write up a report at the end of the project. This report will be sent to each funder. All donations are fully tax deductible and all money collected for these projects go directly to the project. The following teachers and students need your generous support: September 2003Classroom Library: help establish a reading library inside this elementary school classroom of 4th graders in the Cleveland district. These books were recommended by the district to be purchased but there was no budget for them! Career Scope: a modular program in vocational and consumer science for a middle school in the city of Cleveland. 1,380.00 Completing the Circle: Parents, Students, Teachers: peer tutoring and parent involvement are the two prongs of this elementary school project that will give kindergartners a chance to read books to their parents and second graders tutor the kindergartners. $1,217.00 Tarblooder Mania: a Robotics course that infuses physics while incorporating integration of communication and writing skills to explain predicted and observable outcomes resulting from their explorations for a Cleveland high school. $1,465.00 Exploring Timely Issues and Ideas: Town Hall Series: transportation is needed and to take these high school students downtown six times this year to hear interesting and topical speakers including the former prime minister of Pakistan, the head of Greenspace, etc $1,050.00 Fun With Magnets: for these inner city seventh graders this project would give hands on activities through the use of magnets and necessary materials for use in an electricity and magnetic forces unit. $1,475.00 Photographs and Journaling for Third Grade: replace old chalk boards with white boards and a digital camera and color printer for these students to learn history, create murals, and put themselves in the pages of history! $925.00 Whodunit: Forensic Science: for these high school students in Cleveland this project will blend biology, anatomy, chemistry, earth science, and physics to emphasize complex reasoning and critical thinking. $1,489.55 Butterfly Thematic Unit: for these children in this elementary school with multiple disabilities who remain in one classroom for many consecutive years this project would be one of the first hands on thematic units and they would study the life cycle of butterflies. $776.00 Project S.E.A.L.: Success Encourages All Learners: a 4th grade reading program of this Cleveland elementary school designed to improve below level readers literacy. $1,482.00 Dancing: Improving Social Skills in Children with Special Learning Needs: Elementary School Projects1st grade classes would like to participate in the KEEP BOOKS project. It is a school/home book program that reinforces reading skills and establishes a connection between the student and their parents so that they take an active interest in their children's education. This project is produced by the Ohio State University. There is a wide variety of interest at reading levels pre-K through 2nd grade. There are 400 books in the set with 50 copies of 8 titles each at a cost of $1,500.00 Read Children Read is a project to create a classroom learning center that promotes literacy for second graders and would enable the children to take books home to read with their parents Included in the learning center are audiotapes, headphones, storage containers, reading manipulatives and storage. Arts and crafts materials for book projects to work on with their parents at home are also needed. Total cost of this project is: $1,230.00. Interaction - Reaction project for social studies that will focus on learning experiences that require cooperative skills. The kits requested simulate learning that involve the students in active roles and teaches problem solving and critical thinking skills. Total cost of this fourth grade project is $853.00. Dinomight about Dinosaurs is a unit that addresses the following National Science Standards: exploring and examining fossils, compare and contrast current living/nonliving organisms, construct puzzles using logical reasoning, classify different bone pieces, build dioramas and investigate the scientific method formulation of a hypothesis or question. Cost is $1,500. Key Concepts is a program for K-4 students that have emotional and behavioral disorders. This second year teacher needs videos, books, and special social skills kits that can be used in combination with the present classroom skills curriculum. Each student would receive a personal multimedia kit that can help teach and prepare these students to meet daily challenges in a positive way. Cost of this project is $1,070.00 Second Grade Writing Portfolio Project will purchase educational materials and supplies to address the needs of auditory, visual, and kinesthetic tactile learners as well as enhance the learning opportunities for students. It will greatly enhance their chances of passing the proficiency exam. Total cost of this project is $1,100. Enhanced Learning Through Clay is a project for the art department of this elementary school. They need a kiln, and clay for each student as right now there is only enough for 25 students to complete a project. Total cost is $1,100. Improved Reading Skills is a project to purchase phonics materials for below level readers as well as books on tape for the listening center and workbooks, cassettes and supplemental games. Cost is $1,000. Music Enrichment project to supply the music department with essential supplies for creative music activities. Cost is $975. Art Supplies: this new school needs art supplies. The teacher wants to use multi media to enhance the regular school curriculum and integrate their studies into the art program. Cost is $1,250. Math Improvement project to help young students in desperate need of extra assistance, materials, and experiences in math. Cost is $400. Girl Power is a national program for sixth grade girls that promotes self-confidence. There are presently 21 girls that participate in this project and they are considered at risk. This program mentors girls through senior year of high school and the funds would provide books, posters, training for mentors, and meeting supplies for the girls and their parents. Cost would be $$900.00 Middle School ProjectsScience With Captain Bligh is a project for eight graders that uses the mutiny of the HMS Bounty as an overall theme for the curriculum. The activities have an intriguing theme to keep students' interests so that they can learn practical applications in their own lives. This is a first year teacher who has not had the opportunity to order the supplies needed for this project. Cost is $1,444.00. Practice Makes Perfect for special needs 7th graders who are integrated into regular classrooms is a project to help them improve their reading skills by buying novels they can take home and read. Their parents verify that the student has read the book and the student may then take out another book to read. Cost is $500. Health and Fitness Project is a program for 150 middle school students to teach fitness and healthy lifestyles. Activities include after school African dance and drum class, visits to the Health Museum, HIV/Aids and drug education, and pamphlets, videos, and health posters for the classroom. Cost is $1,250. NASA After School Club is part of an action plan set up for middle school students to incorporate NASA lessons into curriculum material. Math and Science subjects are to be emphasized. Funds for classroom materials, models and drawing materials as well as a field trip to NASA is being requested. Cost is $1,100. Media TechnologyClub/AV Support involves 16 students who wish to revive the Media Services Club and the media services department needs aid to replenish needed supplies that they are in urgent need of including instructional videos, video cassette recorder, digital camera, memory card and cassettes. Cost is $1,350. The cheerleaders need new uniforms!!! These middle school cheerleaders want to compete in a local competition and need new uniforms and transportation. Cost is $1,000. Special education students need materials to help them interact more effectively with the mainstream students. The materials this teacher is requesting would allow these students to be active learners Cost is $468. High School ProjectsForeign Language Department at this high school needs CDs of popular Spanish and French songs to help reinforce grammar and vocabulary study. They would also like to purchase a karaoke machine for classroom use so that memorization of verbs would be easier. Cost is 1,000 Biology Lab Kits for doing research on world's biomes and ecosystems. These students need videos, reading materials, lab kits on human biology, calculators and pollution testing kits. Cost is $1,155. ECity Entrepreneur Class is a program to teach inner city youth the principles of running a small business Students go on four field trips as well as needing class materials. Cost is $950. AP Test Preparation for students enrolled in Advanced Placement Literature need materials to complete the course and prepare for the fall AP tests. They need AP approved materials. Cost is $970.
